Blanche of Castile was Queen of France as the wife of King Louis VIII. By him she had thirteen children, including his heir Louis IX. When her husband died after only three years on the throne, Blanche acted as regent for their young son, a task she performed with great political skill. She was regent again when Louis went on crusade, but she died before his return.
