The Life of Frank Buckland

This lovely little book is a biography on the life of Frank Buckland.

Born Francis Trevelyan Buckland, he trained as a surgeon but was a noted zoologist and natural historian. This book, written by his brother in law, covers his childhood, his time at Oxford and his education in surgery, through to his interest in natural history, especially fisheries.

Condition

This book has blue cloth boards with dark blue embossed illustration on the front board and gilt lettering and illustration on the spine. There is no dustjacket but the boards are clean and there does not appear to be any real fading from light exposure.

The spine is cracked at the front and back of the book, but the binding is secure and all the pages are present. There are some foxing marks on the first two and last two pages but the rest of the pages are clean and free of pencil marks.

Between pages 190 and 191 there is a small advert for Nelson’s books which appears to have been used as a bookmark by a previous owner. One hopes that they finished the book! There is no publisher date in this book, but judging by the feel of the paper and the boards it is definitely before the 1940s.

Overall this is a nice little book on a little-known figure from British history, and may be of interest to anyone interested in zoology or natural history.
