King Charles II spent the early part of his reign in exile in Europe. When he eventually reclaimed his throne he became known as the "Merry Monarch". Although he had several illegitimate children by his various mistresses, he didn't have any children with his wife Catherine of Braganza. As a result on his death the throne went to his brother, James.
