Translations from the Poems of Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo is perhaps most famous for his novels Les Miserable (turned into a musical) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (turned into a Disney movie). However, he also wrote a large collection of poems. This book appears to have been published in the months after his death in May 1885, with the introduction referring to his death at the end.

This 19th century book has waxed blue cloth boards with a plain front and just a small label with the title and author pasted to the spine.

The spine is cracked in several places but the pages are all secure and none appear to be loose or missing. There is some foxing on the first few and last few pages, but the bulk of them appear to be clean. The text block has a deckled edge finish which has very minor (less than 1mm) tears throughout and which has collected some dirt and grime, as you would expect from a book of this age.

Tucked in between pages 50 and 51 is a small piece of paper advertising that "Love letters of a violinist and other poems" is due to be published in July 1886. This date suggests that this advert originally came with this book, and does not appear to be a long lost bookmark.

There is no content page at the front but there is an index at the back. Poems in this collection include; To George, By Silence She The Battle Won, and The Tomb Said to the Rose.

This book is in very good condition for one that is over 100 years old. It is still very readable and should last many more years with a little care.
